«James is technically very able, driven to succeed and is self-managing. I have worked with him on several occasions as part of the WebSphere ESB organisation at IBM, and found him to be helpful and easy to get on with. I would highly recommend James as a colleague.»

Information retrieval using user-generated metadata
USPTO
Basically, augmenting Latent Semantic Indexing to consider previous user behaviour.
"System, device and method for using user-generated metadata to arrive at a modified search index that emphasizes a relationship between documents selected by a user during a prior search session and salient terms of those documents. "System, device and method for using user-generated metadata to arrive at a modified search index that emphasizes a relationship between documents selected by a user during a prior search session and salient terms of those documents. An initial search index is modified by adding a synthetic term and a synthetic document to terms and documents that are used to arrive at the elements of the index and by modifying the relevance scores to highlight one or more of the search terms, the synthetic term, and the synthetic document. Synthetic term ties a cluster of related documents together and synthetic document ties terms of these documents together. Synthetic term is not found in any other documents and synthetic document does not belong to any normal corpus of documents. Modified index aids in re-generating prior user choices because it contains artifacts reflecting associations that user perceived between various terms and documents." -

Charging batteries using usage history
IP.com
As a society we are increasing reliant on the use of mobile devices e.g. mobile phones and PDAs. Due to the nature of mobile devices, the number of batteries that anyone has in their possession can be high; each may be a different type and so has its own best charging policy. This article describes a method for determining battery charging, based on factors such as usage patterns. This approach has the advantage of being less reliant on careful charging by the user.

Pattern matching in audio data to aid compression
IP.com
Conventional audio compression algorithms do not involve an analysis of the complete audio data sample but work on small subsets of the data in isolation. In a lot of music, especially modern music, there is a considerable amount of repetition with sections either repeated verbatim or repeated with slight variation throughout a track - the choruses in a song for example. By analysing the entire audio data and using pattern recognition to identify this partial redundancy, it is possible to…
Conventional audio compression algorithms do not involve an analysis of the complete audio data sample but work on small subsets of the data in isolation. In a lot of music, especially modern music, there is a considerable amount of repetition with sections either repeated verbatim or repeated with slight variation throughout a track - the choruses in a song for example. By analysing the entire audio data and using pattern recognition to identify this partial redundancy, it is possible to increase the level of compression by basing the compression of many similar sections on a single conventionally encoded section. To account for the slight variations between the repetitions, a delta can be included to be combined with the original section and thereby retaining fidelity.
