We just released our H1 2024 Digital Health funding summary. https://lnkd.in/gAZY64tp H1 2024 Digital Health funding closed at $12.4 billion invested across 719 deals. - Q2 2024 is outperforming Q1 by 34% ($7.1 billion vs. $5.3 billion)! - Digital Health funding has shown sustained investor confidence. Funding in Digital Health in North America is up 14% to $9.5 billion. Investment in Europe is down 10% to $1.52 billion, while funding in APAC dropped by 7% to $1.17 billion. - Partnerships in Digital Health are flat in the first half at 1,730. NVIDIA has been the strongest corporate partner in H1 2024 - 96 M&As, 8 bankruptcies, 5 delistings from the stock market and 3 relistings from NASDAQ to OTC market. The state of Early-Stage Digital Health funding in Europe The #European digital health landscape is bustling with innovation and growth. With over 3,500 ventures and 3,000+ early-stage investors, the region is a powerhouse for health tech development. Notably, 26.5% of these investors have made at least three investments since 2019, underscoring their commitment to fostering early-stage startups. Early-stage investors play a pivotal role in this ecosystem, with 33% of venture capital and 85% of deals since January 2019 focusing on early-stage rounds. In total, 1,900 unique investors have participated in 1,472 early-stage deals, injecting a significant $7.1 billion into the market. Our latest spotlight on the Most Impactful Early Stage Investors reveals their substantial influence in driving digital health innovation. These investors are clustered around key areas like Medical Diagnostics, TechBio, and Patient Solutions. Digital health startup funding was $5.7B in the first 6 months of 2024. Thanks to Rock Health's investment report, the industry is on-pace to raise more funding than 2023, which is a welcome sign for many later-stage healthcare companies. It does feel like more rounds are being filled by existing investors (i.e., insider rounds) these days, but founders need to raise from whoever will invest at a reasonable valuations / limited liquidation preferences. Feels like early 2025 is the target for many digital health companies to go public. For most unprofitable companies, this will allow them to raise additional capital at a IPO and provide liquidity to existing investors. Now the revenue multiple expectations might be lower than what investors want, but that's the market. The median software multiple is 5.2x in the public markets. Obviously pure software companies will generally trade at higher multiples that digital health companies that involve tech-enabled clinician services (i.e., lower gross margins). I think the organizations who trade for a valuation premium will be both incredibly strategic with industry tail-winds (i.e., home-based) and profitable. But that's just my two cents. The Visionary or the General Manager? Technology startups, specially the solo founder ones, typically are formed by visionaries, or at least by those who assume they are the visionaries. After achieving some preliminary success, these companies enter a phase that the founder(s) has to decide to either be the visionary or the general manager. It is common for them to wear both hats for a while, but sooner or later, they come to the realization that only one of those hats suits them the best. The smart ones go out and find someone who can wear the other hat and complement their skills.
