MINSK, 11 July (BelTA) – Undermining electoral sovereignty is an element of colonial dictatorship, Chair of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova said at the plenary session of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg. The plenary session discussed the role of parliaments in improving the efficiency of international relations and ensuring their democratization,” BelTA has learned.

“In the world we live in, it is vitally important for countries with shared values, for those who want peace, global security and growth for current and subsequent generations, to develop a common strategy to prevent external interference in internal affairs. National election campaigns often become the target of destructive politics,” said Natalya Kochanova. “Today, electoral processes go beyond a purely domestic agenda and, without exaggeration, have an impact on the future of the world order. Therefore, successful elections in any country are, of course, an international victory, a contribution to a common and indivisible security, stability and world peace,” the speaker noted.

Therefore, parliamentarians, people's representatives are more interested than anyone else in the institutional consolidation of electoral sovereignty as an inalienable and exclusive right of the state to independently conduct elections. “The main goal is to fulfill people's will  and to ensure their freedom of choice under the supremacy of national legislation, and to prevent interference in the electoral process,” the speaker noted. “BRICS will be able to strengthen its authority by putting together an election observation mission to evaluate elections based on the actual compliance with accepted standards, without 'tailoring' reports to the political position of Western elites.”

“Perhaps the time has come to think about establishing a special international body to protect national electoral processes. After all, today we want the equal right of all peoples to self-determination, independent choice of a national path of development, while the undermining of electoral sovereignty is nothing more than an element of colonial dictatorship,” Natalya Kochanova added.
