Barnes has recorded somewhat experimental projects under the A Hawk and a Hacksaw name. His first album, a self-titled affair, kept a folksy tone to it, having been recorded in France with a group of [[The Elephant Six Collective|Elephant Six]] bandmates including members of Neutral Milk Hotel, [[Of Montreal]], and [[The Olivia Tremor Control]]. His second album, ''Darkness at Noon'', continued this experimental tone, relying on accordion and other antique instrumentation.
