Instructions

edit

Please feel free to report incidents, a complaint about an administrator, or anything you want administrators to be aware of.

Please be aware that these pages aren't the place to bring disputes over content or requests for a mediation between another editor and you — we aren't referees. You are better to talk with that editor by mail or on talk, or ask other editors their opinion on Village pump.

The chief purpose of this page is to allow admins to ask each other for help and/or information, to communicate ideas, and for admin talk to happen.

However, any user of Wikiquote may post here. Admins are not a club of elites, but normal editors with some additional technical abilities. Anyone is free to use it to talk to admins as a group. Please feel free to leave a message.

If you do, please sign and date all contributions, using the Wikiquote special form "~~~~", which translates into a signature and a time stamp automatically.

To request special assistance from an administrator, like deletion, use appropriate pages or tags.

To request assistance from a specific administrator, see [[User talk:Whoever]].

If there is another page which is a more natural location for the discussion of a particular point, please start the discussion there, and only put a short note of the issue, and a link to the relevant location, on this page. Put another way, to the extent possible, discussions are better off held somewhere else, and announced here. This will avoid spreading discussion of one topic over several pages (thereby making them harder to follow), and also reduce the rate of changes to this page.

I am asking if any of the other admins can weigh in on the discussion I had at User_talk:Ficaia#Nigger_(racial_slur). I had also raised a similar issue in the post above that one on their talk page. Basically, it seems that this user (who has been a prolific contributor to the site), has determined that if a "quote" is less than 250 words, even if it represents the entirety of a poem or other work, it is fine to have it all on a page here. I disagree and have tried to point out that WQ is meant to be a collection of selections from works, rather than the full work itself (as that is what Wikisource is for). Other examples of the use of entire (or overly long sections of) poems can be found at the following pages, all created by this same user: Chidiock Tichborne, Robert Hawker (poet), James Clarence Mangan, William Strode (poet), Rachel Annand Taylor, Geoffrey Whitney, George Turberville, and Nicholas Grimald. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks. ~ UDScott (talk) 14:47, 12 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

No one has any thoughts on this? ~ UDScott (talk) 13:06, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
"Brevity is the soul of wit." (William Shakespeare, Hamlet, Act II, sc. ii) 'Nuf said? No?
"The art of quotation requires more delicacy in the practice than those conceive who see nothing more in a quotation than an extract." (Isaac D'Israeli, Curiosities of Literature (1791–1824), "Quotation") Needs clarification? ~ Ningauble (talk) 23:14, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
A related problem with the extremely long quotes added to Nigger (racial slur): they give excessive WEIGHT to a couple of fairly trivial pieces of doggerel. By including a short quotable segment from such material, together with a link to the longer source, WQ offers all that is in its own scope to provide. HouseOfChange (talk) 00:04, 30 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree with you @HouseOfChange - this is part of why I've highlighted some of these pages. Do you mind taking a look at some of the others as well and see what you think? I believe there is too much taken from some sources on these pages, but I am reluctant to perform severe trimming at this point, as it would appear to be an edit war. Thanks. ~ UDScott (talk) 12:51, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I did look at a few, but didn't see a problem. There is less problem of WEIGHT for an author's article when giving long-ish samples (each less than 250 words, however.) HouseOfChange (talk) 15:37, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Possible lock evasion around Akhtar Aly Kureshy

edit

I would like to alert ongoing lock evasion around this article. Special:CentralAuth/Jinnahpk is the initial major contributor, and after their global lock, they are continuing edits via several IPs. Last month, Special:Contributions/205.164.153.238 appeared here and they were globally blocked (m:special:redirect/logid/56467266). Their latest IP seems to be Special:Contributions/43.251.253.83 (previous global blocks are m:special:redirect/logid/56376287 and m:special:redirect/logid/56467267), and their recent global contributions overlap with the original main account. Please decide what to do with the IP and the page itself. Thank you for your attention. MathXplore (talk) 14:46, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Goodfellas

The page history suggests there is a content dispute here. Does this need full protection? MathXplore (talk) 00:38, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Dronebogus, PeacefulArmy18: Can you please explain what's going on here and why you're reverting one another? Your edit summaries are not instructive. —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:40, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Massive unexplained changes from a new user Dronebogus (talk) 09:40, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I changed some dialogue to accurately quote the movie and Dronebogus insists on undoing those changes. PeacefulArmy18 (talk) 11:37, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Can you please post to the talk page there to come to a consensus? And if you two cannot, then please invite other editors to comment. That is much more constructive than reverting back and forth. —Justin (koavf)TCM 11:42, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I didn’t understand. The last few days have been exhausting to say the least Dronebogus (talk) 12:02, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
