The Week Ahead: Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week.

Dia de Los Ninos, Dia de Los Libros

Thousands of free books will be distributed to children during the annual Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros this weekend. The event, which in English means Children’s Day/Book Day, honors the Latin American day honoring children and emphasizes learning.

The event is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Washington Park, 200 Washington St., near the El Paso Zoo. For the first time, the family-friendly event will be kicked off with a parade near Shelter Place and Orchard Avenue before reaching Washington Park. New Bikeshare Station at Ascarate Park

The SunCycle bike share program is coming to Ascarate Park and the Playa Drain Trail. The new station will open with a free event, SunCycle Trek & Trail Kick Off, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Ascarate Park, 6900 Delta Drive. Free parking before 11 a.m., with a $10 charge afterward. Cash only.

Free snow cones, music, scavenger hunts, games and prizes will be part of the event, where participants can explore the park and trail on SunCycle bikes. The station has seven docking stations for the bikes, which can be checked out and returned to that or other stations across the city. Rides are free during the event. After the event, rates start at $6 for 30 minutes.

The SunCycle bike share program was launched by the Camino Real Regional Mobility in 2015 and now includes more than 20 bikeshare stations citywide.

‘Musica Sin Fronteras’ at History Museum

El Paso’s rich music heritage will be on display at the El Paso Museum of History with the new exhibition, “Musica Sin Fronteras: Twentieth Century to Now,” starting Saturday. April 27.

“From dynamic musicians to iconic bands, from eclectic genres to renowned studios and venues, the exhibit celebrates the rich tapestry of musical heritage that calls the borderlands home,” a museum press release states.

The “Musica Sin Fronteras” exhibit opens for its first public viewing  from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the museum, 501 N. Santa Fe St. Regular museum hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Information: El Paso Museum of History.

Tree Planting at Playa Drain Trail

As part of the annual Celebrate Trails Day, the Paso del Norte Trail will plant 25 trees along the Playa Drain Trail in the Lower Valley this weekend. The public is invited to participate in planting 20 Palo Verde and five Honey Mesquite trees to create shade along the trail. Participants should bring shovels, gloves and sun protection.

The Celebrate Trails Day: Planting Roots with the Community event is from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27, starting at 7499 Mimosa Ave. and will include music and prizes.

The Playa Drain Trail began as a 3.4-mile segment from Ascarate Park eastbound to Riverside Park and now is a more than 8-mile trail connecting to Capistrano Park. It’s part of the planned 68–mile span of the Paso del Norte Trail, which is divided into five districts across the Borderland.

Opportunity Center for the Homeless Open House

The community is invited to an open house of the Opportunity Center for the Homeless, the largest network of emergency shelters and housing options in the community, in celebration of its 30th year in operation.

The open house is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 26, at 1208 Myrtle Ave. A special presentation and recognition by El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar is slated for 9:30 a.m. Attendees will tour the facilities, meet the organization’s founders and staff, and hear stories from individuals who have been served by the Opportunity Center.

La Vina Winery Spring Festival: Noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28, La Vina Winery, 4201 New Mexico Highway 28, Anthony, New Mexico, featuring more than 20 wines, food, vendors and live music.
