Abstract

From ancient times, the fishes of Lake Kinneret have attracted the attention of scholars and travellers. Josephus Flavius explained the presence of Clarias lazera, referred to under the Roman name of Coracinus, by an underground arm of the Nile River. Old and New Testaments often refer to fish and fishermen of the lake (Tristram, 1911; Nun, 1964, 1977). Hasselquist (1757) was probably the first collector of fish and from his material Artedi described one of the most common cichlids of the lake, Sarotherodon galilaeus
