New route to sepsis therapy

There are currently very few therapeutic options for sepsis, in which uncontrolled systemic inflammation can lead to multiple organ failure. Now, writing in Science Translational Medicine, Gaultier and colleagues report that the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) sigma 1 receptor (S1R) is a critical regulator of ER-stress-driven inflammation. Furthermore, the antidepressant fluvoxamine, an S1R agonist, protected mice from lethal septic shock.
