Types of Breast Implants

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants contain a gel-like substance (silicone) that is considered closest to the texture of real breast tissue. This helps to give the breasts a more natural feel. Because these implants are inserted at full size, the incisions must be a bit longer than they would be with saline implants.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are comprised of a silicone shell and sterile salt-water filling. They can be filled after the implants are placed in the breast, thus allowing for moderately smaller incisions. They are considered the safest option because, in the rare case that an implant ruptures, the saline solution is expelled from the body with no problems.

Form-Stable Implants

Also known as gummy bear implants or teardrop implants, this is a newer shape of silicone implants that replicates the slope of youthful breasts. Prior to the advent of form-stable implants, all implants were round. Many patients prefer this implant style since it helps make the breasts look both natural and perky.

Breast Augmentation Details

Dr. Hassouneh and Dr. Rice begin by making an incision, usually around the areola or across the lower breast crease. The implant is inserted through this incision and can be placed either behind the breast tissue (subglandular) or behind the chest muscles (submuscular), depending on your preferences and cosmetic goals. If a saline implant is used, it is filled after being placed. Once your surgeon has created the contours discussed during the consultation phase, he sutures the incisions.

General anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable during your surgery. This outpatient procedure is usually completed in under two hours.

Breast Augmentation Recovery and Results

Following your surgery, you should focus on rest and relaxation for the first several days, taking prescribed pain medication as necessary to limit any discomfort. After 10 to 14 days, you should feel well enough to return to work and resume light exercise like walking.

Expect to have some swelling and bruising following surgery. A compression garment helps to minimize discomfort and accelerate the healing process, so it is important to always wear it except for when showering. Your contours should gradually improve as the swelling subsides, with your full results typically becoming visible after three or four months. Breast implants are highly durable but are usually removed and/or replaced every 10 to 15 years.
