‘Togo’

At the risk of sounding like the guy who screams “Get off my lawn!”, I’m not a fan of all the CGI animals running rampant at the movies these days. The new Jungle Book? Nope. The new Lion King? Absolutely not. The new Call Of The Wild? Get off my lawn! (Oops, I promised I wasn’t going to do that.) Togo, however, bucks the trend by employing a bunch of awesome —and totally real!— Siberian huskies to tell the amazing true life tale of a bunch of sled dogs who made a treacherous journey in 1925 across hundreds of miles of frozen terrain to retrieve medicine that would eventually save the lives of the entire town of Nome, Alaska. Led by the fearless Willem Dafoe —who, it should be mentioned, is on an absolutely LEGENDARY tear over the last few years— the movie does a fine job balancing breathtaking action scenes and emotional moments that tug at your heartstrings. I hope this film serves as a reminder that real dogs are man’s best friend, not computer generated images.
