‘The Making of ROCKY VS. DRAGO by Sylvester Stallone’
Did you know that Rocky IV was singlehandedly responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union? Look it up in your history books*. The USSR was well on its way to defeating the United States in the Cold War until Rocky Balboa watched the evil steroid machine Ivan Drago murder his frenemy Apollo Creed, propelling Rocky to ditch his robot butler and defeat the human embodiment of Communism in the most famous and important boxing match ever held. But wait … there’s more!
Rocky IV writer/director/star Sylvester Stallone, not content with making the single greatest movie in the history of motion pictures, decided to spend the pandemic poring through his old footage, coming up with 40 ADDITIONAL MINUTES of Rocky pounding his proverbial hammer and crushing Drago’s sickly sickle. The Making of ROCKY VS. DRAGO by Sylvester Stallone is a 93 minute exploration of this singular auteur’s motivations to recut his populist masterpiece that positively TEEMS with Christ imagery. What it lacks in high value production (the opening of the film notes that this was shot on an iPhone — eat your heart out, Soderbergh!) it more than makes up for in passion, hilarious anecdotes, and raw awesomeness. U-S-A! U-S-A!
*Disclaimer: You probably won’t find this in your history books, BUT THAT DOESN’T MAKE IT NOT TRUE.
