‘Skins’
If you’ve ever watched a young British actor pop up in a million films, start winning awards, and wondered, “hey, where did they come from?” The answer is almost always the long running UK show Skins. Nicholas Hoult, Game of Thrones‘ Hannah Murray and Joe Dempsie, Dev Patel and many more got their start on what can’t quite be called a teen soap opera (and that’s just from Season 1). That’s because Skins isn’t just a soap opera; it’s an exploration of what makes us human, at our most emotionally raw age. Each episode focuses on a different point of view character who attends a school in Bristol, South West England. And each episode unflinchingly takes a deep look at them, flaws and all. Nothing is off the table: from your typical teen heartbreak; to eating disorders, substance abuse, and PTSD. It’s also very, deeply funny and willing to engage in flights of fancy. The cast rotates every few years, so you can jump in and out every few seasons, versus having to binge the whole thing. But at the very least watch the second episode, “Cassie,” which focuses on Hannah Murray’s character, and stands as one of the best single hours of television every produced.
