As soon as Miranda Priestly appeared on our screens, played by the living legend Meryl Streep, audiences knew that they were now in the presence of an iconic character. The Devil Wears Prada is widely recognized as a modern classic. With its captivating characters, exciting twists, and fashion that was to die for, this comedy holds a solid place in film history. Now, it appears that there are still more stories from this world to tell. According to Puck, a sequel of the 2006 movie is in early development at Disney. Here is everything that we know about this upcoming movie continuation.

What is The Devil Wear Prada about?

The original film centered around Andrea “Andy”  Sachs (Anne Hathaway), a recent college graduate who dreams of becoming a professional journalist. In order to move forward in her career, she takes a job as an assistant at Runway, a fashion magazine, working under the notorious Miranda Priestly (Streep). The only problem is Andy knows nothing about fashion, which is evident in the way she dresses. Working alongside Miranda’s other assistant Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), Andy has to fulfill all of Miranda’s needs, which take up almost every minute of her life. Nevertheless, with the help of art director Nigel Kipling (Stanley Tucci), Andy may figure out how to handle this job. However, will that come at the cost of her morals?

What will the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada be about?

Puck’s Laura Sherman reports that the sequel will reportedly shift gears from a focus on Andy to a story centered around Emily Charlton, who has become a fan-favorite character over the years. In the upcoming film, Emily will be an executive at a luxury group. Miranda is still in the magazine business, but the industry has been declining in recent years, which means that Miranda may need some advertising money from Emily and her company. Of course, Miranda is not one to grovel, so this deal will not come easily, which could lead to a fierce standoff between the boss and her former employee.

Who is writing the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada?

For the sequel, Aline Brosh McKenna is in talks to be the screenwriter, according to that same Puck report. McKenna was the writer for the original The Devil Wears Prada film. Her other writing credits include 27 Dresses, We Bought a Zoo, and I Don’t Know How She Does It. She recently made her feature film directorial debut with Your Place or Mine. In addition, McKenna was the co-creator and showrunner of the musical dramedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. McKenna has not been officially confirmed to return for this sequel, but if she does, it could be a promising sign for the upcoming film’s success.

Will Anne Hathaway be in the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada?

Part of what made the original The Devil Wears Prada so successful was its stellar cast. Therefore, the question on everyone’s minds is if that talented group of actors will come back for the sequel. So far, no one has been confirmed for an official comeback in this new film, but that Puck report claims that “I hear that the film’s Oscar-winning producer, Wendy Finerman, has convinced Streep and Emily Blunt to sign on for a sequel to the hit film.”

However, there was no mention of the character of Andy in this sequel, which means it is unclear if Hathaway would return, as there may not even be a place for her. More details will likely be revealed as the movie gets further into development, so fans will have to simply wait with bated breath.

Does the sequel of The Devil Wears Prada film connect to the books?

The Devil Wears Prada film was adapted from a novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger, which came out in 2003. Weisberger was previously an assistant for Anna Wintour at Vogue, which leads to some people taking the book, and the movie, as a basis for that experience. There are many creative differences between the movie and the book, but when it comes to the major details, the stories are essentially the same. Following the original novel, Weisberger wrote two sequels, neither of which have previously been adapted to film. The book sequels are Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, which came out in 2013, and When Life Gives You LuluLemons, which came out in 2018. While the first sequel focused on Andy’s successful career running a bridal magazine, the second sequel follows Emily and her career as a celebrity image consultant. While neither book sounds like the plan for the film sequel, the latter book also had a focus on Emily as opposed to Andy. Therefore, the film sequel may borrow some elements from that novel. These story choices remain to be seen, but it looks like the movie’s sequel will be an original story for the most part.

Does the sequel of The Devil Wears Prada connect to the musical?

The news of this sequel comes shortly after the musical version of the film, with music by Elton John, began previews in London at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth. It will run at this theatre until August 17, 2024. This tryout precedes a run on West End at the Dominion Theatre. The musical originally premiered in Chicago in 2022, but mixed reviews led to the creative team retooling the musical. The current production of the musical has Vanessa Williams as Miranda, which is fitting considering she played a similar character on Ugly Betty (as pictured above). There has been no news about a Broadway run, but it is certainly not out of the question. Even though productions of the musical and sequel are at similar times, the two appear to have no connection to each other in story or people. In addition, the film sequel has no plans to become a stage musical at this time. Despite all of that, with all of the new The Devil Wears Prada media coming out, it is a fantastic time to be a fan.
