I guess you could say the price is… high. According to The Price is Right host Drew Carey, it’s “not unusual” for contestants to use “liquid courage” to compete on the show.

Speaking to TV Insider, Carey admitted, “That happens here all the time.”

He continued, “They’ll have a [marijuana] gummy or I’ll smell alcohol on their breath. Not unusual.” Carey even recalled one contestant who was chosen from the audience to compete — all while “tripping on mushrooms.”

“He came with a bunch of friends. He was a sketch [comedy] guy. I found out later when I went to [comedy theater group Upright Citizens Brigade] to hang out, and they were like, ‘Did you see that guy who claimed to be a skateboarding rabbi?’” Carey said. “I asked him what he did for a living. And he goes, ‘I’m a skateboarding rabbi.’ He didn’t think he was going to get picked, and he totally tripped.”

But Carey praised the show’s live audience, telling the outlet, “That’s a favorite part of the show. They’re normal people that live normal lives. This is average America right here. There are no CEOs, ultra-rich upper management… These are middle class, working class. Every religion. It’s a cross-section of America.”

Weirder things have happened on The Price Is Right.

Earlier this year, former producer Mike Richards revealed the game show has a protocol in place in case a contestant pees on themselves while filming.

“When I got there, they had a system in place in case someone peed their pants,” Richards told People. “I never saw it happen, but there were curtains and a blow dryer and [a] pair of sweats just in case, since we’d have to get on with the show.”

Carey took over The Price is Right mantle from legendary game show host Bob Barker after he retired in 2007. Now in his 16th year, he’s become the longest-running game show host on television since Pat Sajak retired this year from Wheel of Fortune.

Prior to his ongoing stint on CBS, Carey famously hosted Whose Line is It Anyway? and The Drew Carey Show.

The Price is Right airs weekdays on CBS at 11/10c.
