Sometimes, an on-screen father-daughter relationship is just that — on-screen. For Gaby Hoffmann, who earned her first film credit at 6 years old in Field of Dreams as Karin Kinsella, the daughter of Kevin Costner‘s Ray Kinsella, this seemed to be the case.

While speaking with Business Insider, Hoffmann shed light on the relationships she had with other co-stars on set, including Ray Liotta — whom she “just absolutely loved” — and Amy Madigan, who played her on-screen mother, Annie Kinsella, per Us Weekly.

“I just absolutely loved Ray,” she shared. “I was convinced he was in love with me, too, which, of course, he wasn’t, but he was just such a sweetheart.”

She continued, “I didn’t have a dad growing up, and there were just so many wonderful men on that set. And Amy Madigan, who played my mother, who I loved so much. But I just remember there was a lot of paternal energy. Ray Liotta and, actually, all the baseball players, I would sit around and play cards with them and play catch with them.”

While Hoffman teased that she “sort of jokingly said [she] had a big crush on [Liotta],” she “think[s she] was really drawn to a kind of fatherly, protective energy that he had in spades.”

“What a beautiful actor he was, too,” she added of the late Goodfellas star, who died at age 67 in May 2022.

After she said she “never saw him again,” she was asked if Costner exuded any of the “paternal energy” Liotta did.

“I didn’t feel paternal energy from Kevin Costner,” she replied. “We’ll leave it at that.”

Last week on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Costner recalled meeting Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on the set of the iconic sports fantasy film when they worked as extras.

“They were sitting in the stands, like, college guys, and they came up, and they both leaned in at the same time, leaned back at the same time, looked at each other at the same time as we talked,” he told host Jimmy Kimmel. “And they had this big enthusiasm. They were on fire.”

Kimmel reached out to Damon, who said Costner “came out and hung around with the extras between setups.”

“‘I asked him what he was doing, and he said, shooting the shit. and I laughed like a 12-year-old girl.’ Still the way he laughs,” Kimmel teased while reading Damon’s message.

Jokes aside, Kimmel continued, “‘It was a big deal for us, because he had the exact career that we wanted. He was very nice to us.'”
