The Fall Guy co-stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt reunited during Gosling’s third stint hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend to promote their new movie. But the pair also looked back on the eventful summer they had in 2023, when their respective blockbuster movies Barbie and Oppenheimer faced off in the theaters when they premiered on the same day.

Gosling kicked off his SNL monologue by addressing the elephant in the room: His Oscar-nominated performance as Ken.

It was almost heartbreaking to see him say goodbye to his character. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to make any jokes about Ken,” he told the crowd before solemnly adding, “Because it’s not funny.”

He continued, “When you play a character that hard, that long, just letting go makes you feel like a breakup. And for processing a breakup there’s only one thing that can help: The music of the great Taylor Swift.”

He then sat at a grand piano and launched into a Barbie-themed cover of Swift’s hit single, “All Too Well,” in which he crooned, “If I said I was doing fine, you know I’d be lying / Because I was just Ken, and now I’m just Ryan.”

It was beginning to feel like there was no end in sight when Blunt unexpectedly stormed the stage to cut him off, demanding to know what he was doing.

When Gosling claimed he was “promoting” their movie, Blunt replied, “No you’re not, we had a whole Fall Guy monologue planned with a bunch of stunts, it was going to be epic. I was going to hit you with things and instead you’re singing about Ken again.”

After much back and forth, Gosling asked Blunt if she ever missed her character in Oppenheimer, in which she played J. Robert Oppenheimer’s wife Kitty, who struggled with alcoholism.

“I mean…,” she said, before trailing off and picking up a microphone of her own to sing: “Father of the atom bomb and a battle of Jack / I used to be the alcoholic wife of a dude in a hat.”

While it’s refreshing to hear something other than “I’m Just Ken,” the Oscar-nominated ballad Gosling belted out in the movie and on the Oscars stage this year, their “All Too Well” parody certainly took us places we never expected to go. But Swift apparently loved it.

She reposted Saturday Night Live‘s video of the performance, writing, “All Too Well (Ryan and Emily’s Version) !!! Watch me accidentally catch myself singing this version on tour. This monologue is EVERYTHING.”

This marked Gosling’s third time hosting Saturday Night Live, but it also served as the highly anticipated – and severely delayed – SNL reaction to Barbenheimer that we could have gotten last year had the show not been put on hold due to dual Hollywood strikes.

The episode also brought back two of Gosling’s most popular SNL sketches, “Papyrus” and “Close Encounter,” which included a special appearance from SNL alum (and his Barbie co-star) Kate McKinnon.
