Following the blockbuster success of Barbie, Margot Robbie has set her sights on a new project: A live-action adaptation of the Monopoly board game.

Variety reports Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap will be producing the feature film, along with her partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara. Hasbro Entertainment, the company behind the board game, will also produce.

Though details regarding the film are still sparse, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said at CinemaCon that LuckyChap has “a clear point of view” for the film.

“Monopoly is a top property — pun fully intended,” LuckyChap said. “Like all of the best IP, this game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring this game to life alongside the wonderful teams involved at Lionsgate and Hasbro.”

According to Variety, Monopoly is “the world’s most popular board game brand” with almost half a billion copies sold since 1935. The board game gives players the chance to become real estate tycoons, with the goal of buying and trading properties and collecting rent.

It appears that Robbie and her company are carving out a niche in live-action movies based on games. The company also acquired the rights to The Sims video game franchise.

Loki director Kate Herron is attached to direct and co-write the screenplay with Briony Redman. Much like Barbie and, now, the Monopoly feature, Electronic Arts, the company behind The Sims, will also produce and offer creative input.

Robbie earned a whopping $50 million for her role in starring and getting Barbie made after the film netted $1.4 billion worldwide since it premiered in July 2023. This success bodes well for LuckyChap’s future projects, even if they continue pursuing other existing IPs.

Robbie played an integral role in leading Barbie to its record-breaking run in the box office last summer. The live-action adaptation was stuck in development hell since at least 2009, when Mattel first tried getting the movie made. The project was later revived with Jennifer’s Body screenwriter Diablo Cody attached, but that also fell through.

It wasn’t until Robbie stepped in with her production company that the film successfully came to fruition. And her star power allowed her to bring on Greta Gerwig, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay.

Robbie’s production company is also behind a number of recent critical successes, including Saltburn and I, Tonya.
