‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Producer Confirms Sixth Film

Grab your closest bottle of rum because Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is on the horizon. Seven long years after Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales debuted in theaters, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that a “reboot” of the beloved franchise is in the works.

Bruckheimer, who famously worked on the Pirates franchise as well as Top Gun, made the revelation while chatting about which film he would bring back first in an interview with ComicBook.com.

“It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know,” the producer, who was promoting The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, said. “Because with Top Gun, you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you.”

He added, “But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

If Bruckheimer isn’t waiting on anyone specific, it appears that franchise star Johnny Depp might officially be out. But this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Depp, who played Captain Jack Sparrow in the first five Pirates films, parted ways with the company amid his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard — and during his infamous defamation trial in spring 2022, he said he would never work with Disney again.

“The fact is, Mr. Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a Pirates of the Caribbean film? Correct?” Amber Heard’s attorney Ben Rottenborn asked during the trial, to which Depp replied, “That is true, Mr. Rottenborn.”

Meanwhile, rumors of a sixth film starring Margot Robbie have been circulating for years. While Robbie told Vanity Fair that Disney was no longer moving forward with the film, Bruckheimer noted that they hope to revisit it in the future.

“We developed two scripts at once and the Margot Robbie script was a little further away, but we’ll get that made down the line too and focus on more of an ensemble Pirates movie at this point,” he told The Wrap.

Last summer, The Last of Us creator Craig Mazin revealed to the Los Angeles Times that he and original screenwriter Ted Elliott were working on a script for a new Pirates movie — but the dual Hollywood strikes put them on a temporary hold.

“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did!” Mazin said in August 2023. “And then we wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”

While details are being kept under wraps, Bruckheimer has been adamant that he would be open to having Depp back to reprise his role as the iconic pirate.

“I would love to have him in the movie,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022. “He’s a friend, a terrific actor and it’s unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do.”
