Like the rest of us, actor Josh Lucas — who plays a young John Dutton in Yellowstone — has no idea what creator Taylor Sheridan has in store for the hit show’s fifth and final season.

On Wednesday night’s (March 20) episode of Watch What Happens Live, a virtual fan called in to pick Lucas’ brain on what’s to come in the highly anticipated second half of Yellowstone Season 5, which finally scored a November 2024 release date.

“Taylor is a closed book,” Lucas said. “If there is a closed book, it’s that man. He’s a one-man band. He does everything himself. Like [he’s a] very unusual guy.”

He continued, “Most shows have 10 writers, right? Or more. And Taylor is doing all of it himself. And he keeps it very close to the chest so none of us know.”

Lucas doubled down that not a “single person” — including star Kevin Costner — knows how the series will end. However, he noted that the mystery is “kind of fantastic because we’re gonna show up and he’s gonna hand us a script and we’re gonna go from there.”

The actor recently told Deadline that “as far as he knows,” he will be reprising his role as a younger version of Costner’s character. “I did text Taylor a couple of months back and said, ‘Hey man, I’ve loved working on the show so much. He’s like, ‘Well we’ll be back,'” Lucas said.

There’s been a lot of talk about what’s going to happen with Yellowstone — and whether Costner will even return to help close out the series. Production was reportedly delayed after the midseason finale aired in January 2023 due to scheduling conflicts involving Costner, per The Hollywood Reporter.

It wasn’t until May of last year that Paramount Network announced the end of the flagship series, as well as a sequel that’s widely rumored to star Matthew McConaughey.

Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
