CBS recently announced that it plans to develop a new soap opera titled The Gates which will focus on a wealthy Black family living a gated community.

The new daytime drama will come from Michele Val Jean, a veteran soap opera writer who has worked on The Bold & The Beautiful and General Hospital, per Deadline. The Gates marks the first new soap opera to be released on broadcast networks in years, and it will also be the first daytime drama to focus on a Black family since the 1989 NBC soap Generations.

This bodes well for CBS and the future of daytime television, but Deadline notes that The Gates could pose a risk to another CBS daytime series, The Talk.

As Deadline reports, The Talk is the lowest-rated show on the network’s daytime lineup when compared to the likes of hit programs like of The Bold and the Beautiful and The Price is Right.

The Talk has recently seen a number of changes as it enters its 14th season.

Former The Late Late Show with James Corden EP Rob Crabbe recently joined the show, where he’s made a number of notable changes to the program’s formatting. The network also let go of the show’s executive and a PR rep as part of company-wide layoffs.

And even more telling, CBS has not yet renewed The Talk for a new season.

The Talk has been on the air since 2010. Julie Chen Moonves, Sharon Osbourne, Leah Remini, and many others have co-hosted the program since its inception. The show is currently hosted by Sheryl Underwood, Amanda Kloots, Jerry O’Connell, Akbar Gbajabiamila and Natalie Morales.

As Deadline notes, The Talk remains the third most-watched daytime talk show behind The View and Live With Kelly and Mark.

The future of The Talk could certainly be up in the air, but The Gates is still in early development. It could still be some time if before it gets ordered to series at CBS. What that could mean for The Talk remains to be seen.
