The 2019 psychological thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer stars Barry Keoghan in his pre-Saltburn breakout role and is directed and co-written by Yorgos Lanthimos, whose name is on everybody’s lips after watching Poor Things (which won the Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture award at the 2024 Golden Globes).

First things first, the window of opportunity to easily stream this movie is dwindling. While the drama has been out for several years, it is being removed from Netflix on Monday, January 22, 2024. So if anything about the thriller intrigues you, run… don’t walk. 

The Killing of a Sacred Deer follows cardiac surgeon Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) as he strikes up an odd relationship with Martin (Keoghan), a fatherless teenage boy with an unhealthy obsession.

At first, Steven is open to forming a bond with Martin but he pulls away as the young boy starts to desperately demand his undivided attention. 

In response, Martin threatens the health of Steven’s family and claims that all of his children will die if he doesn’t murder one of them. Excuse me? What the fuck? Of course, Steven doesn’t immediately believe this. Why would he? Though, he quickly recognizes the severity of the situation when they start to unexpectedly fall sick. 

In addition to Keoghan and Farrell, the movie stars Nicole Kidman, Raffey Cassidy, Alicia Silverstone, and Bill Camp, and features additional writing by Lanthimos’ frequent collaborator Efthimis Filippou.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a captivating ride that’ll make viewers question the trustworthiness and reliability of each character. This thriller is deeply unsettling, and thanks to the unique way that it presents the story’s moral and ethical dilemmas, it’s bound to stay on the brain for a while.
