Ryan Gosling Wants To Use His Kenergy In A New Way For ‘Barbie’ Spinoff: “Can I Play Husky Ken?”

He’s just Ken — and Barbie star Ryan Gosling is open to playing him again, but perhaps not in the same way we saw in the original movie.

While taking part in an audience Q&A at London’s BFI Southbank, Gosling and his Barbie co-star America Ferrera were asked whether they knew of any plans for a sequel film. The Notebook star was hesitant to confirm or deny the possibility, telling the crowd, “Oh, I’m not going anywhere near that. We really know nothing,” per Variety.

Ferrera echoed that they have “no information,” adding that director Greta Gerwig and star/producer Margot Robbie have previously said “they did not set out to make a franchise.”

“They put it all out on the table. Every bit of it that they loved and that they knew to do, they did. Which is refreshing, right?” Ferrera explained. “We’re not setting it up for 20 years of Barbie movies. But then again, I know nothing, so there might be 20 years [of Barbie]… or a Ken spinoff?”

Meanwhile, Gosling chimed in with his own ideas if a Ken spinoff ever came to be. According to the actor, he’d like to use his Kenergy in a different way.

“Can it be a husky Ken?” he joked. “Can I play Husky Ken, like Sandwich Ken? Can I play that Ken next time?”

This is hardly the first time a Ken-based sequel has been suggested. While speaking in an interview with 60 Minutes, Gerwig revealed that they had “way too much material for Ken,” per Deadline. When she was further pressed about the possibility of a future film based on the doll, the director said, “I can’t comment on that. I mean, the truth is, you know… I guess we’ll see.”

Not long after Barbie came out in July, Gerwig also told People that she hoped it would become the “launch of a world and a bunch of different Barbie movies.”

She added, “There’s a tone and a humor and a joy, and obviously the world is so beautiful. I want to go back to Barbie Land.”

Barbie is currently available to rent or buy on digital platforms and will be available to stream on Max starting Dec. 15.
