Late night host Stephen Colbert announced he will be canceling this week’s episodes of The Late Show because he is recently suffered a medical emergency.
In a statement on social media, Colbert revealed that he is currently “recovering” from surgery for a ruptured appendix.
“Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week,” he wrote. “I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix.”
His statement continued, “I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas.” Fans rushed to the comments to wish the late night host a speedy recovery.
This was going to be one star-studded week on The Late Show. Though a re-run was slated for Monday (Nov. 27) evening after the Thanksgiving break, there were new episodes planned for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with special celebrity guests.
Jennifer Garner was slated to appear on Tuesday’s (Nov. 28) episode alongside Elvis director Baz Luhrmann.
Wednesday’s (Nov. 29) episode was scheduled to feature Patrick Stewart and The Late Show‘s former bandleader Jon Baptiste. The Grammy winning artist was expected to sit down with Colbert for an interview and performance that evening.
Barbra Streisand was also set to play a quick round of “The Colbert Questionert” after she filmed a special interview in her home with Colbert about her recently released memoir.
Frasier creator Kelsey Grammer was also going to appear to talk about his new series reboot, which premiered on Paramount+ in October.
The Late Show airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on CBS.
