The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes opens in theaters everywhere today, bringing audiences back to Panem for the first time in eight years.

The movie is based on the 2020 novel by Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins. It’s a prequel that tells the origin story of the soon-to-be-villainous President Snow, played by Donald Sutherland in the original trilogy, and played by Tom Blyth in the new film. While it’s the first Hunger Games film without star Jennifer Lawrence, director Francis Lawrence, who’s helmed every Hunger Games film since Catching Fire, is back.

With Blyth as a young Cornelius Snow and Rachel Zegler as the District tribute who captures his heart, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is sure to scratch the itch for fans of the franchise. In fact, they’ll be begging for more—especially because the movie leaves some things open-ended. Here’s what we know about the possibility of a The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes sequel.

Will there be a The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes sequel movie?

There are currently no plans for any future Hunger Games movies at this time. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a standalone prequel and complete story based on the 2020 novel by Suzanne Collins, and Collins has made no indication that she plans to continue the story of young Cornelius Snow.

That said, director Francis Lawrence said in a recent interview with Inverse that he’d be happy to direct more Hunger Games movies—but only if Collins provides the source material. “I would return to direct more if Suzanne wrote another book, but I have no idea if there’s any more books on their way or not,” Lawrence said.

Collins didn’t do many interviews for the release of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and hasn’t indicated one way or the other if she plans to write more Hunger Games novels. Apparently, even Lawrence (the director, not Jennifer) isn’t even in the know! We’ll have to wait and see, but it doesn’t sound like there will be another Hunger Games movie any time soon.
