Friends is one of the biggest TV shows of all time, and Monica and Chandler (played by Courteney Cox and the late Matthew Perry, respectively) are arguably one of the most beloved on-screen couples of all time.

But one scrapped scene from the fifth season of the show could have ruined one of TV’s favorite pairings.

Actress Lisa Cash, who guest-starred on an episode of the fifth season of Friends called “The One in Vegas: Part 1,” sat down with TMZ to discuss how her original role for the episode might’ve been a game-changer for all involved if it had been filmed and aired as planned.

“I came in as a guest star on Friends, and I was super excited,” Cash told TMZ. “Basically, the scene was Chandler and Monica were arguing in Vegas about Monica having lunch with Richard. And initially, in our script, Chandler goes up to the hotel room, orders room service, and I bring it up as a hotel worker, and we end up talking and laughing and connecting, and Chandler ends up cheating on Monica with my character.”

Gasp! The quirky, ever-lovable Chandler cheating? Unthinkable!

Apparently, Perry also felt this way, and advocated for a change in the story prior to shooting.

“The day before we were shooting in front of a live audience, I was told that [he] went to the writers and said the audience will never forgive him for cheating on Monica,” Cash said. “Which, he was probably right. That would’ve changed possibly the course of the show and of his character.”

Since his tragic Oct. 28 death, there has been an outpouring of love and support in memory of Perry and his career. Even Cash, who wasn’t completely cut from the episode and instead played a flight attendant in a later scene, had nothing but kind things to say about her short time working with the actor.

“It was just really so neat to work with him, because I was coming in and I was new to the industry and it could’ve been really intimidating for me,” she said. “But I just felt so comfortable and he was really likable and welcoming and made me feel at ease.”

It’s hard to imagine a world in which Chandler and Monica might have suffered a cheating scandal, but what a relief that Perry stepped in!

Friends is now available to stream on Max.
