Baz Luhrmann returns to his 2008 historical drama Australia with his new Hulu series, Faraway Downs, which is a reimagining of the previous work.

Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Bryan Brown, and Brandon Walters star in the infamous movie.

The new series expands on the original movie by adding additional footage and an alternate ending, though no new footage was captured.

“We didn’t approach Faraway Downs with the notion of replacing the film Australia, rather, the excitement was around the concept of epic, episodic storytelling that has been reinvigorated by streaming,” said Luhrmann in a press release for the series provided to Decider.

The filmmaker continued to share that he spent time chatting with First Nations filmmakers and storytellers while creating the film.

The story follows English aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman) as she visits Australia to sell her million-acre ranch, but only finds trouble instead.

Along the journey, Lady Sarah meets a cattle drover (Jackman) and a biracial Indigenous Australian child Nullah (Walters). Together, they face several major challenges.

In Luhrmann’s note, he wrote “Fundamentally, this is Nullah’s story.”
