Drew Carey spoke out for the first time since the writers strike began, thanking writers who acknowledged the meals he provided strikers at Bob’s Big Boy and Swingers during the WGA strike.

“I deeply appreciate all the love and thanks. It (was worth) every dime,” he said in a post on X. “But if you really want to thank someone for those meals, thank Bruce Helford and all the Drew Carey Show writers.
They helped make me rich enough to afford it. No writers, no $. Simple as that.”

The host of The Price Is Right had not previously commented on his decision to cover the tabs at the two restaurants since the strike began on May 2.

While nobody knows the exact cost, it has been estimated that Carey spent $10,000 per week, which means he likely spent over $500K total.

Writers who took advantage of the free meals at Bob’s had the opportunity to sign a guest book to show their appreciation.

“It really has created the Cheers atmosphere for us,” WGA strike captain Jono Matt had shared during the strike when Carey’s generous offer was valid. “So Drew, you rock.”

Writers and studios reached a tentative agreement for a new contract on September 24, with the union ordering the strike to end on September 27.

Carey’s show ran from 1995-2004 and was executive produced by the star himself. The latest season of The Price Is Right just recently debuted from its new headquarters in Glendale.
