The upcoming Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, an animated Netflix spin-off of the 2010 Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, sees the return of its entire cast to voice their respective roles. And it turns out that Scott Pilgrim himself (Michael Cera) might have been a driving force behind this reunion.

The Scott Pilgrim franchise director Bryan Lee O’Malley told Entertainment Weekly that “before this anime was even on the docket, Michael Cera responded to a meme someone had sent” in their cast email chain — a thread which he said “went dormant for nine years” — “as if no time had passed.”

“He just said, ‘Oh, that’s funny,'” O’Malley recalled. “Chris Evans responded like, ‘Michael, what the fuck are you doing responding to this email from nine years ago?’ And then we all started chatting again.”

O’Malley explained that he was”very nervous” that cast members wouldn’t come back for the new project, and was pretty surprised when they did get the whole gang back together.

“I didn’t know we would get anyone, or especially everyone,” he said. “We just started asking, and [director] Edgar [Wright] asked, and I wrote a really nice letter, and everyone just very very kindly and very promptly said yes.”

Returning cast members include Cera, Evans, Brie Larson, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza.

O’Malley also noted how he and the cast “were all pretty young when [they] made the movie,” which marked its 13-year anniversary in August.

“We all felt like family and I think we have ever since,” he shared.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is slated to hit Netflix on Oct. 17. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is streaming on Peacock.
