After the Nancy Drew Season 4 finale aired on The CW on Thursday (Aug. 24), executive producer Larry Teng revealed the shocking way they learned the series was not going to be picked up for a fifth season.

In a thread posted on Twitter, Teng wrote, “From what I’ve read, the reaction to the series finale have been mostly positive. Now imagine if you watched that finale without us knowing it would be the last episode of #NancyDrew ever. Because that’s what almost happened.”

The producer explained that CBS Studios wanted to sort out the future filming schedule so that the series lead, Kennedy McMann, could star in both Nancy Drew and The Good Lawyer. Teng said CBS Studios called The CW around the time they were filming Season 4, Episode 10.

“[They] asked the president of the new CW when we would find out about a pickup so we could make scheduling decisions. And it was then, he said to us ‘Oh, we’re not picking you up…,'” he wrote. The president of the network, Dennis Miller, allegedly said the show was “too expensive,” according to Teng.

Teng wondered “if we would’ve ever been told” had the studio not made the call. By that point, they only had a few episodes left to film of Season 4. He also wrote that they were already working towards the season finale that would later become the series finale.

“What a fucking shitty way of telling us we were getting canceled. Thank God the Studio called,” he tweeted. “Because you all deserved the most proper ending possible. That’s why I praise the writers for pulling it together at the end. It was so glib.”

The show’s cancellation was announced in October 2022. According to Deadline, the decision had been finalized before The CW’s chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz left the company.

“To have clearly known in advance e and not tell us until a random call 3/4 into our season is just plain fucking disrespect. I’m glad y’all enjoyed the finale. You deserved that,” Teng wrote.

Fans offered their support in the replies, praising their work in turning Nancy Drew around and creating such an “underrated” show.

He also teased that “there’s more to that convo between the CW Prez and the Studio,” though he didn’t get into specifics.

Seasons 1-3 of Nancy Drew can be streamed on Max.
