We’re done playing games! Netflix has dropped a giant bob-omb about their upcoming Scott Pilgrim anime series, now titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which will see the cast of the 2010 cult movie, including Michael Cera, Chris Evans and Brie Larson, reprising their roles. The movie’s director and co-writer Edgar Wright also joins as an executive producer.

Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, will serve as a showrunner, alongside BenDavid Grabinski. In our recent interview with Cera, who plays the eponymous character, he praised O’Malley’s script for the new project.

“It’s strange and very fun,” Cera told us. “Scott Pilgrim has such a specific energy. The whole project, the whole world of Scott Pilgrim, is very energetic and really funny… Every time I’ve recorded it, I have to send Brian an email saying, ‘I love this so much. I’m so excited about it.'”

Now, the streaming giant has shared a teaser trailer for the series, along with its release date, episode count, and more. Curious to learn more about the anime series? Continue reading for everything you need to know.

What Is Scott Pilgrim Takes Off About?

Directed by Abel Gongora, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s popular graphic novel series, which was adapted into the 2010 live-action film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Here’s the synopsis, via Netflix:

Scott Pilgrim meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, but learns he must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. Then things get even more complicated. Based on the graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley.

Though the synopsis specifically states the show is based on the graphic novels, eagle-eyed fans have noted that the teaser trailer has near-identical shots to the movie and doesn’t feature the fan-favorite graphic novel character Lisa Miller, who also didn’t play a role in the movie adaptation.

O’Malley’s graphic novels follow Scott Pilgrim, bass player for the local band Sex Bob-omb, as he falls in love with Ramona Flowers and finds out he must defeat her seven evil exes to date her. The original graphic novel series contains six volumes, released from 2004 to 2010, which quickly garnered critical acclaim.

Back in March, the cartoonist teased, “It’s hilarious. It’s emotional. It’s visually stunning. The action scenes will blow your mind. And there might be a few surprises along the way.”
