Alyssa Farah Griffin called out Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on yesterday’s (Aug. 1) episode of The View as the conservative politician continues to come under fire for his state’s Black history curriculum.

DeSantis, who has faced criticism from Black Republicans over the lessons — which claim slaves could benefit from the skills they acquired in slavery — has refused to back down, telling Fox News on Monday (July 31) that he “didn’t pick the fight” over his state’s curriculum.

The View, however, was hardly convinced by the 2024 hopeful’s words.

“It’s disgusting,” Griffin said. “But I want to point out every, pretty much every, prominent Black Republican — including some of the most Trump-y to the really moderate, decent guys like Will Hurd — came out and said, ‘You are wrong on this.’ They condemned him and he doubled down. He started arguing with them.”

Whoopi Goldberg replied, “Yes, because that’s what stupid people do.”

As the audience cheered, Griffin added, “How dare, how dare the white men around Ron DeSantis, and him included, Blacksplain to Black Republicans how they should feel about slavery?”

Joy Behar then chimed in to ask, “Why don’t white Republicans stand up for this?” to which Griffin replied, “Well, they should,” but Behar snapped back, “But they don’t.”

Griffin then gave credit to those within her party who stood up to DeSantis, telling the panel, “I want to shout out Tim Scott, Byron Donalds, Wesley Hunt, Will Hurd all came out. And some of these are really right-wing Republicans that were like, ‘You are wrong on this.’ And real leadership is, you step in it, you put out something stupid or your Department of Education does, and you say, I hear you. I see you. We’re reversing course.”

Griffin accused DeSantis of “desperately trying to make it about Vice President Harris and ignore the litany of Black Republicans who are saying it’s wrong.”

Harris has publicly blasted DeSantis’ education standards, saying in late July, “This is unnecessary to debate whether enslaved people benefited from slavery. Are you kidding me? Are we supposed to debate that?”

She has since shut down the governor’s offer to debate his curriculum, saying, “There is no roundtable, no lecture, no invitation we will accept to debate an undeniable fact: there were no redeeming qualities of slavery,” per The Guardian.
