Freeform’s hit series Cruel Summer may have just wrapped Season 2 on July 31, but fans are already begging for more.

After the show’s premiere in 2021, the young adult thriller — which was originally planned to be a limited series — became Freeform’s most-watched series in network history. With a definitive ending but a devoted fanbase, executive producers Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple made the decision to produce a second season. After assembling a writer’s room to create a plan, the Cruel Summer team decided to transform the show into an anthology, featuring a new story and new cast each season.

The second season follows the death of a teenager in the quaint town of Chatham, Washington in the year 2000. The show’s iconic time jumps make their return, as the characters’ stories unfold throughout the summer of 1999, the winter of 1999, and the summer of 2000 when the body is discovered. As it jumps around, we slowly start to piece together how and why this major character’s death happened.

Now it’s time for another big decision: Will there be a Season 3 of Cruel Summer? Here’s everything we know about the possibility of a third season of Cruel Summer.

Will there be a Cruel Summer Season 3?

Freeform has not yet renewed Cruel Summer for a third season. But, the show hasn’t been canceled either, and executive producers Biel and Purple told E! News that they’re “hoping for a Season 3.”

“A lot has to do with the time period, if we’re going back into the early ’90s or later into the 2000s, because we do like the show to speak to what was happening at the time,” Purple shared in the June 2023 interview. “It’s hard to say, but we’re hoping for a Season 3, so if people show up for Season 2, Freeform will have no choice.”

Biel followed up Purple’s comment, chanting, “Come on, people, show up, please!”
