Hulu‘s original musical romantic comedy series Up Here has been canceled after just one season

The platform ordered the project to series in January 2022 and Season 1 just debuted on Hulu back on March 24.

According to Variety, the series featured originals songs from Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the songwriters of Frozen and Frozen 2, who also executive produced. It was written and executive produced by Steven Levenson, author of Dear Evan Hansen, along with Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (New Girl, My Name Is Earl).

Thomas Kail, director of Broadway shows such as Hamilton and In the Heights, directed and executive produced under his Old 320 Sycamore Productions banner. Jennifer Todd of Old 320 Sycamore also executive produced. Old 320 Sycamore has an overall deal with 20th Television, so they were in the studio as well.

Up Here starred Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes, along with Katie Finneran, Sophia Hammons, Emilia Suárez, Andréa Burns, John Hodgman, and Scott Porter.

According to the show’s official logline, it was “set in New York City in the waning days of 1999. It follows the extraordinary story of one ordinary couple, as they fall in love – and discover that the single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves – and the treacherous world of memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that lives inside their heads.”

The series debuted to mixed reviews from critics, receiving just a 56% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, in Joel Kellers review for Decider, he wrote “Up Here certainly has the pedigree to be a good musical rom-com. But Whitman and Valdes elevate what is already good material by just being so damned cute together.”
