God Is a Bullet, which was released in theaters on June 23, follows Detective Bob Hightower (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who has just discovered that his ex-wife has been murdered and his daughter Gabi (Chloe Guy) has been kidnapped by a violent cult.

With the help of Case Hardin (Maika Monroe), one of the few individuals who was able to escape, and The Ferryman (Jamie Foxx), an outcast with intel on the cult, Bob invades the cult in order to save his daughter and seek vengeance. The cult, which is led by Karl Glusman‘s Cyrus, has a brutally dark history of ritually killing children, further fueling Bob’s mission.

The film is based on Boston Teran’s novel of the same name; the idea for the book came to the author after he visited in a dive bar in Thailand, per Collider. After seeing someone graffiti a line of text on the wall, Teran asked what the words meant in English, to which they replied, “God is a bullet right to the head. You start to feel better the minute you’re dead.” The quote resonated with the author, who was later compelled to craft the story.
