If you think about it, the director of a film is essentially a parental figure of the production. In Greta Gerwig‘s case, she feels a certain motherly instinct when it comes to working with Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan.

The two stars are Gerwig-production veterans, having starred alongside each other in both Lady Bird in 2017 and Little Women two years later in 2019.

In an interview with Cinema Blend, Gerwig gushed about Ronan and Chalamet, both of whom she had reached out to for “specialty cameos” in her upcoming star-studded Barbie movie.

“Well, it was always going to have to be a sort of smaller thing because [Ronan] was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for,” Gerwig shared. “And of course, it’s brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo.”

She continued, “I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy (Chalamet), and both of them couldn’t do it and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much.”

The Oscar-nominated director explained that filming her new movie without the two of them “felt like doing something without [her] children.”

“I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom,” Gerwig quipped.

Ronan, who was allegedly unable to ‘doll up’ for the new film due to a scheduling conflict pertaining to her filming The Outrun, told People she was “gutted [she] couldn’t do it.”

“I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London and they were [filming] there,” she continued. “There was a whole character I was going to play — another Barbie.”

Ronan joked that she would even settle for walking through the background of some “pick-up shots,” and having texted her previous Mary Queen of Scots co-star and Barbie star Margot Robbie and Gerwig about doing so.

Chalamet has previously expressed his love for Gerwig and Ronan, both of whom he cited two members of the Little Women cast and crew that he would call if in need of heartbreak advice, per ELLE UK. As for his recent work, he has a vast array of upcoming projects. A notable one is the titular role in the musical Wonka that sets to delve into the origin story of the master chocolatier.

While Ronan and Chalamet will certainly be missed, Gerwig’s upcoming film is still star-studded, with Robbie’s Barbie starring alongside Ryan Gosling’s Ken, and with appearances by America Ferrara, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, and Michael Cera, just to name a few.

Barbie is hitting theaters on Friday, July 21.
