Warner Bros. Japan is taking a new approach to the age-old tale of Harley Quinn and Joker.
The studio unveiled a first look at Suicide Squad Isekai at the Anime Expo 2023 with WIT studio, the production company behind Spy x Family.
“Deadly crazy party of the baddest villains land themselves in ISEKAI!!!” the official website teases. “The most dangerous & bizarre fantasy adventure unveiled…!!!”
The original anime series will bring the beloved DC characters of the Suicide Squad to an entirely different realm in this isekai adventure. Isekai, which literally translates to “different world,” is a genre of anime where the character gets transported to another world.
Jujutsu Kaisen animation director Eri Osada is attached to direct, with Re:ZERO writers Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara attached to write. The news was originally reported by IGN.
Not only will the anime transport these characters to a different world, but Osada said they got “the express permission from DC to have the characters use magic.”
It’s currently unknown which Suicide Squad characters fans should expect to see in the show. The trailer exclusively showed Harley Quinn and Joker wreaking havoc together while spliced-in clips showed mysterious glimpses of a fantasy world – and a dragon.
Previous iterations of Suicide Squad have not been promising, so DC fans may take this striking trailer with a grain of salt. The 2016 film from DC was a box office flop while critics deemed it a “disappointing disaster,” with pointed critiques of Jared Leto‘s portrayal of Joker.
“Everybody has their favorite version of Joker,” Osada said. “We ultimately decided to not copy any particular iteration and have something completely unique.”
It appears that this anime is not connected to James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s DC Studios, which is currently rolling out its own rebooted slate of content.
Reports state WIT Studio CEO George Wada asked the audience to tell Gunn to watch the anime.
A release date for Suicide Squad Isekai has not yet been announced.
