Secret Invasion is two for two when it comes to concluding episodes with major MCU moments. First there was the shocking death of [SPOILER] in the premiere episode. For the second installment in Marvel’s latest six-part series, Secret Invasion went in a totally different — but similarly surprising — direction. Instead of killing a character, the Disney+ show introduced an important one: Nick Fury’s wife.

Wait — Nick Fury is married? Since when? And to who? There are a lot of questions worth asking, and we’re gonna ask them all below.

Who is Nick Fury’s wife? Meet Priscilla Fury

For context, we actually don’t know a whole lot about Fury’s marriage. All we see in Episode 2 of Secret Invasion is one scene at the very end of the episode. In it, Fury arrives at a house in the greater London area. He enters the modern yet classy home, looks around, and approaches the kitchen. There he sees a character played by Charlayne Woodard, a character we know is named Priscilla. She says that he forgot something, so he doubles back to a small table and picks up an object. It’s a wedding band, which he slides onto his finger. Then we get a kiss.

So, what does it all mean?! Nick Fury is married?! When did he have the time to be a husband between all of the catastrophes and mayhem?! I will point out that it doesn’t look like Fury is familiar with these surroundings. He knows where his wedding ring is, but maybe that’s because it’s always kept on a table by the front door, no matter the address.

“A lot of that came from discussions about what Nick Fury’s wife’s home life was like,” director Ali Selim told Decider on the setting. “She has a job and she has a career, and how did that inform this house? And I think there are scenes where it’s said that this was her house that he moved into because he loved her.”

Did we know that Nick Fury has a wife?

Kinda? She was mentioned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier during the scene in Steve Rogers’ apartment where Fury, injured after being chased by HYDRA sleeper agents, tries to fill the superhero in on what’s going on. Knowing that there are “ears everywhere,” he tells Steve, “My wife kicked me out.”

Considering the circumstances, though, and the fact that Fury was clearly on the run from killers and not on the outs with a loved one, it was reasonable to assume that Fury was just saying whatever at the moment to try his best to not arouse suspicion from whoever was listening in. It turns out, nope, he does have a wife!

So who is Priscilla Fury?

We know one major thing: she’s a Skrull. There’s also another clue about her identity hidden at the beginning of Episode 2, as well. In the opening flashback to 1997 when Nick Fury makes a speech — and a promise — to the Skrull refugees, we meet young Gravik. He’s brought into the fold and introduced to Fury by a Skrull named Varra — and that Skrull is Priscilla Fury.

Okay, all signs point to that Skrull being Priscilla. For one thing, they have the same voice, which means Varra was probably played by Charlayne Woodard as well. And we have to guess about that because the credits do not list Varra. They tell us who played “British Reporter” and “Skrull Guard,” but they don’t include one of the more prominent characters in the episode. Why? Maybe because Woodard is already in the credits as playing Priscilla.

To theorize for a second — I assume Marvel Studios would want to keep the Priscilla/Varra connection secret, maybe because future flashbacks will show that Varra and Fury fell in love while acting as surrogate parents for Gravik. Making Gravik Fury’s estranged and enraged adoptive son would explain why he has such an extreme hatred for the guy. It’s really personal.

Who plays Priscilla Fury in Secret Invasion?

Priscilla Fury is played by Charlayne Woodard, an award-winning playwright, and actor on stage and screen. You may have recently seen her in series like Mayfair Witches, Pose, or Prodigal Son. It’s more likely that you recognize her from her previous work with Samuel L. Jackson, Unbreakable and Glass, wherein she played Mr. Glass’ mother. Yes, Woodard has gone from playing Sam Jackson’s mom to wife; but she is five years younger than him.

Is Nick Fury married in the comics?

Which Nick Fury? Okay, this is going to get complicated. Let’s just go in chronological order.

There’s the original Nick Fury, the one created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee in the 1960s, the one with the gray streaks in his hair who’s always chompin’ on a cigar. He has never been married, but has had a lot of love interests. His most enduring one was Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, a fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent (and also the character played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the MCU). The original Nick Fury has had two sons, one with a weapons smuggler named Amber D’Alexis, and another with a C.I.A. agent named Nia Jones. Fury married neither.

Then there’s Ultimate Nick Fury, the Nick Fury who was introduced in the rebooted, parallel Ultimate Marvel comics universe in 2001. This is the Fury that directly lifted Samuel L. Jackson’s likeness. This Nick Fury had three ex-wives, including a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Monica Chang.

And then back in the regular old Marvel Universe, there’s Nick Fury Jr., the son of the original Nick Fury and Nia Jones. He has no wives or ex-wives.

So there’s that! Three Nicks and zero Priscillas in the comics — at least not yet. You really never know with this guy. He loves secrets!
