Search efforts for Julian Sands, the British actor best known for his role in A Room With a View, have continued six months after he was first reported missing. The star disappeared in January while hiking through mountains in Southern California.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office announced that they were resuming search efforts in a Saturday (June 17) press release, sharing that they had “continued ongoing search efforts in the Mount Baldy wilderness,” but had not located Sands.

According to the report, Saturday’s search included over 80 Search and Rescue volunteers, deputies and staff. Two helicopters and drone crews also assisted in the efforts to locate Sands.

“Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions,” the release noted. “Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10 plus feet of ice and snow.”

Days after Sands went missing in January, the police department issued a public advisory against hiking in the area after the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) Teams responded to 14 rescue missions over the course of four weeks. They warned even the most experienced of hikers would face “extremely dangerous” conditions, including high winds that turned the snow to ice, and increased risk of avalanches.

Since January, the Sheriff’s Department has conducted eight searches — both ground and air — specific to finding Sands. Volunteer searchers have devoted more than 500 hours to the cause, while eight unrelated search and rescue operations have also been sent out in the Mount Baldy area. Back when he was declared missing, it was reported that Sands’ son was also retracing his father’s trail along with an experienced climber.

“Mr. Sands’ missing person case remains active and search efforts will continue in a limited capacity,” the department wrote. “Anyone with additional information is asked to call Detective B. Meelker with the Fontana Station at (909) 356-6710.”
