A new Carrie Fisher film will be released next week, nearly seven years after the actress’s death. Deadline reports that Wonderwell, a coming-of-age fantasy which co-stars Rita Ora, Nell Tiger Free, and Kiera Milward, will be distributed by Vertical Entertainment and will arrive in theaters June 23.

The film will be released digitally after its theatrical run. Fisher stars as a character named Hazel, who guides a young girl named Violet (Milward) to a magical portal that can reveal the future.

Fisher wrapped her role on the film just six weeks before her death on December 27, 2016, and in the time since then, the film was delayed due to COVID-19 and lengthy post-production challenges with the film’s extensive visual effects.

Director Vlad Marsavin explained, per Deadline, “The journey we have taken as filmmakers with this movie, has been as perilous as that of the movie itself. From filming to screen it has taken us seven years. The visual effects on a movie of this magnitude takes time, but we were challenged with Covid lockdowns and of course the passing of our wonderful Carrie Fisher. Now is the perfect time to share her magical on screen moments as Hazel.”

Ora, who starred opposite Fisher, said making the film with the late star was an experience she’ll always remember: “Working alongside Carrie Fisher was one of those experiences that you never forget. I can’t wait for the world to see this intriguing and magical world of Wonderwell,” she said, per Deadline.
