Olivia Thirlby and Elliot Page played best friends in Juno, but it turns out the two actors were even closer behind the scenes. Page, who starred in the 2007 dramedy as a pregnant high schooler preparing to give up a baby for adoption, wrote in his memoir Pageboy that he and Thirlby had “palpable” chemistry on set and would have sex “all the time,” per People.

Page told The View this morning that he was still “incredibly closeted” when Juno came out; he would not come out publicly as lesbian until 2014 and would later come out again as transgender in 2020.

But in filming Juno 16 years ago, Page met the “first woman I had a suitably consensual sexual relationship with,” per his memoir.

After he and Thirlby became friends and admitted their mutual attraction to one another, Page wrote, they were inseparable.

“We started having sex all the time: her hotel room, in our trailers at work, once in a tiny, private room in a restaurant. What were we thinking? We thought we were subtle,” he wrote, per People. “Being intimate with Olivia helped my shame dissipate. I didn’t see a glint of it in her eyes and I wanted that — done feeling wretched about who I am.”

And it’s no mistake that we’re only learning of the steamy off-set hookup now. Page wrote that he kept the relationship “hidden,” and neither actor had publicly come out at the time.

Thirlby came out as bisexual in 2011, telling Brooklyn Magazine, “No one should have to hide their sexual orientation. Loving people is a necessary part of being human, and it is very difficult to love people in secret.”

Elsewhere in Page’s memoir, he revealed his past relationship with another Hollywood figure, Kate Mara. Page wrote that Mara was “the first person I fell for after my heart was broken,” according to a Pageboy excerpt previously published in People.

“This was right after I’d come out as gay and it was a time of exploration and also heartbreak,” Page wrote. “I think my relationship, or whatever you want to call it with Kate, very much encapsulates a certain dynamic that I consistently found myself in, which was falling for people that — I think a lot of us do this — who aren’t fully available. And the sort of safety in that and the highs and the lows and the serotonin bump, and then it goes away.”

While Mara was in a relationship with Max Minghella at the time, Page said he was understanding of their dynamic and supportive.

Page wrote that Mara told Minghella at the time, “I never thought I could be in love with two people and now I know I can.”
