Manifest‘s final batch of episodes gave fans and characters alike closure in so many ways, one of which was by bringing back characters like Carlos, who we hadn’t seen since Season 1.

If you have yet to watch Season 4, Episode 18, “Lift/Drag,” you may want to stop reading to avoid spoilers. But if you’re watching Manifest Season 4, Part 2, you know that a Calling led Michaela (Melissa Roxburgh) back to Carlos, played by actor Mateo Ferro, and the two shared a life-changing chat.

Looking to refresh your memory while watching Season 4, Part 2? Wondering who Carlos is on Manifest? And which episode he first appeared in? Here’s Manifest‘s unexpected callback explained.

Who Is Carlos on Manifest? And How Is He Connected To Michaela, Zeke, and Evie?

Ferro’s character Carlos first appeared in Manifest Season 1, Episode 7, “S.N.A.F.U.” when Michaela’s calling — which included the sound of a beating heart — led her to him for multiple reasons. Not only was Michaela able to stop Carlos from doing something he’d come to regret, but she learned his life was saved by a heart transplant and he has her late best friend Evie’s heart.

Cut to Season 4, Episode 18 when a Calling leads Michaela back to Zeke’s old center and she finds Carlos again. Mich spends the episode remembering Evie and Zeke, then thinks back to a moment when Michaela and Zeke headed up to the roof and she took a page from Evie’s book by telling him to write down all his problems, tie the note to a balloon, and let it go so he could unburden himself.

When Michaela and Carlos reunite in Season 4, he tells her he was Zeke’s intern and lets her know how much he loved her. Carlos gives Michaela Zeke’s Gemini drawing, reminds her that “every life is worth living,” and says Zeke reached through space and time to speak to her through him. Finally, Carlos tells Michaela it’s time to forgive herself for Evie’s death, so she goes up to the roof, ties a note to a balloon, releases it, and finally moves forward.

All four seasons of Manifest are now streaming on Netflix.
