Whether you’re looking for comedy, drama, or sci-fi mind-control-related thriller, you’re in luck – this week’s new movies on VOD have it all, from Ben Affleck’s government-sanctioned hypnotism flick Hypnotic (more like MK-you-are-getting-ULTRA-sleepy), to the light-hearted laughs of the new sequel Book Club: The Next Chapter.
And then there’s Fool’s Paradise, written and directed by (and starring) Charlie Day. In the film, Day stars as a mute man who just got out of a mental hospital. As he wanders L.A. he’s mistaken for a volatile, famous actor who has died, so Day’s character assumes his identity and becomes a part of the Hollywood fold working with A-list actors with names like Christiana Dior (Kate Beckinsale), and Chad Luxt (Adrien Brody). Treated like an untouchable star, Day’s character becomes a parody of a Hollywood bad boy, with all the trappings that come with that. The star-studded cast also includes Jason Sudeikis, Edie Falco, Jason Bateman, and Ray Liotta in one of his final roles. That cast all know a thing or two about Hollywood, which is why they’re perfect to star in a movie that satirizes the business of show.

Hypnotic
Hypnotic, which is directed and co-written by Robert Rodriguez is a classic cop thriller with a twist. The film stars Ben Affleck as a Texas cop named Rourke whose daughter has gone missing. The loss has destroyed Rourke’s life and marriage, but when a mysterious bank robbery leads him to a clue about her whereabouts, he realizes that her disappearance was no accident, and he discovers a powerful mind control ring withing the government that has something to do with it.
Book Club: The Next Chapter
Picture it: Rome, 2023… In Book Club: The Next Chapter, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen and Diane Keaton as four friends who head to Italy for a bachelorette party to celebrate the impending nuptials of Fonda’s character, Vivian, a free spirit who now finds herself about to be tethered to the old ball and chain. (This particular ball and chain is played by Don Johnson, not bad as ball and chains go.) The four women leave their significant others behind for their girls trip, which is filled with Zoom-related misunderstandings, old-age jokes, and wacky hijinks where the women land in jail. It’s silly and predictable, but you’ve gotta love these women for trying.
