In one of the wilder shows to release in 2023, Stars on Mars gives an unexpected cast of celebrities the chance to see who could successfully colonize Mars first.

Hosted by William Shatner, who famously traveled to space himself in 2021 on Jeff Bezos‘ space shuttle, actors, athletes and reality stars alike will compete for the chance to be crowned the “the brightest star in the galaxy.”

With Shatner serving as “Mission Control,” Ariel Winter (Modern Family), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad), UFC athlete Ronda Rousey, Tom Schwartz (Vanderpump Rules), footballer Marshawn Lynch, and others, will receive assignments to help them colonize Mars. Each week, one of the contestants will be voted off — or sent “back to Earth” — by their fellow celebronauts.

Space is not an easy place to visit. As Shatner once said after his trek to space, “It filled me with dread. My trip to space was supposed to be a celebration; instead, it felt like a funeral.”

So, did they actually bring these celebrities to Mars? If not, where did they film Stars on Mars? We’ve got answers:

Where Is Stars on Mars Filmed?

This eclectic cast of celebrities will not be going to Mars for this new unscripted series. Instead, they will live together in “authentic conditions that simulate life on Mars,” where they will eat, sleep and strategize together to come out on top.

The show was actually filmed in Coober Pedy, a desert in Australia with landscape that closely simulates the red planet. The celebrities will be tasked with assignments that mimic real-life Mars exploration projects, testing their abilities to strategize and form alliances.

The location is also where Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome was filmed, among other productions, though Stars on Mars is reportedly the largest production to film in the South Australian location.

The full cast also includes Lance Armstrong, Adam Rippon, Tinashe, Porscha Williams, Richard Sherman, Tallulah Willis and Natasha Leggero.

Stars on Mars premieres on Fox June 5.
