Haaaaave you met Sophie’s dad?

If you haven’t yet, you will in How I Met Your Father Season 2, Episode 12, “Not a Mamma Mia,” which premiered on Hulu May 23. The series is back from its mid-season hiatus and picking up right where it left off: Instead of telling her son the story of how she met his father, Sophie is taking a quick detour to share how she met her father.

After chatting with Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and learning that her now-ex Robert (John Corbett) thankfully wasn’t her dad, Sophie decided she was finally ready to search for her biological father. In Season 2, Episode 12, her mom reveals that he worked at Lollapalooza’s concession stand back in the day, his name ends in “ick,” and he has a barbed wire tattoo around his bicep. Sophie and her pals narrowed the list down to three potential dads — Rick, Dick, and Nick — and set out in search of the questionable tattoo.

So who is Sophie’s long-lost dad? Here’s how we met her father!

After narrowing it down to three names, the group split up in search of Daddy Sophie. Sid and Jesse headed to a gym to find Rick (Bryan Yang), but once they learned he was Asian, they met back up with Sophie and Valentina and accompanied them to Staten Island in search of Nick.

Meanwhile, Charlie and Ellen sought out Dick (Travis Schuldt), who just so happened to work at a strip club. In hopes of seeing his bicep, the two hired him to strip at “a party” in two hours, then they proceeded to stage a bachelorette celebration for Ellen, at which Dick performed a painfully slow pirate-themed strip tease. When he finally reached the end of his performance, his bicep was tattoo-free, so they crossed him off the list, too.

That left Nick, who owned a hot dog joint in Staten Island. Soph, Val, Jesse, and Sid visited the shop and asked for the owner, only to learn he was — wait for it — dead! They visited Nick’s grave, sang an awkward rendition of “Amazing Grace,” and were about to leave in defeat when they saw a mourner (with a barbed wire tattoo on his bicep) visit the burial site. After realizing the late Nick was Sophie’s grandfather and the man visiting his grave, also Nick (Clark Gregg), was his son, AKA SOPHIE’S DAD, the friends followed him back to the hot dog shop and gave him a series of tests to see if he was worthy of an introduction.

Once Nick proved himself a compassionate, fun, not creepy, “Mr. Rogers-level good dude” who’s also a feminist — the dream dad! — Sophie decided to hang back and let him know who she was. After learning he was a Mets fan and realizing it was “just one of 1,000 things” she doesn’t know about him, the thought of catching each other up on their entire lives terrified her.

“Maybe it’s too late for us,” she told her friends when she arrived back at Pemberton’s after opting not to meet Nick. “Will he even like me?” As Sophie’s pals explained her dad would love her when the time was right, Nick walked through the door and said a simple “hi.” What a concept!

Here’s hoping we’ll see more of Gregg, who’s starred in everything from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D to The New Adventures of Old Christine, in How I Met Your Father Season 2.
