‘Justified: City Primeval’ Gets July Premiere Date on FX and Hulu

Justified‘s acclaimed run on FX ended in 2015, but fans who have been longing for the return of Timothy Olyphant‘s Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens can rejoice, because the character is back in the limited series spinoff Justified: City Primeval.

The new series brings the Givens character back, picking up eight years after he left Kentucky with him now residing in Miami. He’s become “a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 14-year-old girl,” per FX’s initial announcement for the show. “His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind.”

Eventually, all roads lead Givens to Detroit, where he begins a search for The Oklahoma Wildman (Boyd Holbrook), a sociopathic killer who has managed to evade the law… until now.

Givens’ now-teenage daughter Willa will be played by Olyphant’s real-life daughter Vivian, who has said that she had to audition for the role. (On Justified, young Willa was played by several actors, including Eden Henderson.) The series will also star Aunjanue Ellis, Norbert Leo Butz and Vondie Curtis-Hall.

Justified was based on the characters created by Elmore Leonard, and City Primeval is no different. The new show is based on Leonard’s 1980 novel City Primeval: High Noon In Detroit. The limited series was first announced in January 2022.

The first two episodes of Justified: City Primeval will premiere July 17 beginning at 10/9c on FX; subsequent episodes will air weekly on Mondays. Episodes will stream the next day on Hulu.
