Someone get the fire extinguisher! Apparently, Melanie Lynskey and Paul Giamatti had extra hot chemistry on the set of the 2011 drama Win Win

During an interview at 92nd Street Y in New York City last month, Lynskey answered a fan question about whom she’d love to film a romantic comedy with.

The Yellowjackets star revealed, “Years ago, I did a movie with Paul Giamatti and a couple of scenes had to be cut out because we had too much chemistry.”

The two co-starred in the movie directed and written by Tom McCarthy, which featured Giamatti as struggling lawyer Mike Flaherty. The lawyer volunteers to become the legal guardian of an elderly man with dementia, Leo (Burt Young), in order to get a monthly stipend. However, the plan gets derailed when Leo’s family becomes involved. Enter Lynskey, who plays Leo’s daughter.

Lynskey continued to share that McCarthy didn’t approve of their chemistry. While filming, he told them, “It’s not what we’re looking for in that moment.” She went on to praise the director, adding that she trusts him “very much.”

She joked, “Ever since then, I’ve wanted to do a romantic comedy with Paul Giamatti!”

The actor continued, “Right now, all I can think is that I want to do a comedy. The next thing is not a comedy. I can’t say what it is, but it’s another tragic thing.”

Recently, Lynskey has taken heavy roles in the television dramas Candy and The Last of Us — the latter of which had Decider’s Meghan O’Keefe calling Lynskey the show’s “most terrifying monster to date.” She also plays a lead role in the Showtime thriller drama Yellowjackets.

Lynskey’s next project, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, is currently in development at Peacock. She was cast last month alongside Jonah Hauer-King and Anna Próchniak.
