Murder Mystery 2 on Netflix delivers viewers more lighthearted Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston shenanigans, because, apparently, that’s what Netflix viewers really want! And who is Netflix to deny the people?

Sandler and Aniston reprise their roles as Nick and Audrey Spitz, a married couple who moonlight as amateur private detectives. Much like the 2019 film, this sequel doubles as an exotic vacation for its stars. This time, the cast is headed to Hawai’i and Paris. Life hack: If you become an A-list movie star, you can get a film studio to pay for your vacations.

Given that the first movie was a huge success for the streaming service, it’s no surprise that Netflix wanted a Murder Mystery sequel. But what about a Murder Mystery franchise? If you make it to the end of the film, you’ll see that the filmmakers leave the door wide open for Murder Mystery 3. Read on for a breakdown of the Murder Mystery 2 plot summary and the Murder Mystery 2 ending explained, as well as what we know so far about the possibility of Murder Mystery 3.

Murder Mystery 2 plot summary:

After successfully solving the cased in the first movie, married couple Nick (Sandler) and Audrey Spitz (Aniston) are now working full-time as private detectives. Unfortunately, business isn’t exactly booming. So when they get invited to the lavish, destination wedding of their old friend, the Maharajah (Adeel Akhtar)—all expenses paid—they figure they could use a vacation. Especially a free one. They are flown in a private helicopter by an eccentric European pilot, played by Carlos Ponce, to the Maharajah’s private island.

Unfortunately, the wedding quickly goes off the rails when the Maharajah is kidnapped by mysterious assailants. Nick witnesses his friend being taken, but doesn’t see the kidnapper’s face. Once again, the Spitzes are on the case. The suspects include the Maharajah’s ex (played by Jodie Turner-Smith), his bride (Mélanie Laurent), his business partner (Enrique Arce), his sister (Kuhoo Verma), and Col. Ulenga (John Kani, reprising his role from the first movie). But the Spitz’s have competition: An SAS mercenary named Conner Miller (played by Mark Strong), who wrote a detective how-to book that Audrey loves, is hired to retrieve the Maharajah. Miller reluctantly agrees to work with the Spitz’s, after the kidnapper calls and demands to speak to Nick.

The kidnapper demands $70 million dollars and says to meet at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The Spitzes show up with the cash, but the exchange goes south. After a series of more and more complications, it’s revealed that both Conner Miller and the Maharajah’s ex were after the ransom money. After a big showdown on the Eiffel Tower, Conner Miller ends up dead, crashing a flaming helicopter into the River Seine. (The ex died earlier in the movie when it turns out her minion triple-crossed her.) But wait! Neither the ex nor Conner are the ones who kidnapped the Maharajah! They were just trying to cash in on the ransom. So who was it behind those distorted voice phone calls?

Who is the kidnapper in Murder Mystery 2?

The sister did it! Saira, the Maharajah’s sister, was upset that her family gave her brother the family business, even though she’s a much smarter and better businessperson than him. Aha! After a brief stand-off that ends in the Colonel getting shot in the arm, again, the group disarms Saira and takes her away. The Spitzes once again solved the case, and now they can finally go home. But not without one last coda…

Murder Mystery 2 ending explained:

Before they leave Paris, Nick and Audrey renew their vows at the love lock bridge. There, they are greeted by the European helicopter pilot from earlier in the movie, who delivers them a gift from The Maharajah: A big bag full of cash! They fly off with their cash in a helicopter. But just as they think they’ve gotten away scot-free, the pilot—who suddenly drops his European accent—turns around and points a gun at their heads. He demands they hand over the bag, and when they do, he yeets himself out of the copter, leaving the Spitzes to scramble to operate a pilot-less helicopter. With that, the movie ends.

Will there be a Murder Mystery 3?

Don’t leave us hanging, Netflix! Do Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston crash and burn, or is there going to be a Murder Mystery 3?

The short answer: We don’t know. There is no official green light on Murder Mystery 3 at the moment. However, both the cast and crew are more than ready to spring into action, should Netflix order another sequel. In an interview with MovieWeb, stars Sandler and Aniston fantasized about their ideal location for Murder Mystery 3, should it come to light. “We’ve been talking Greece,” Sandler said.

Aniston agreed. “Greece would be so fun. We’re figuring it out. We know there’s so many places to go.”

But then Sandler injected a dose of reality into the conversation, saying, “You know where it’s gonna end up being? Wherever Netflix says, ‘Go there’ and we’ll be like, ‘Yes, Netflix’.”

In a separate red-carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight, Aniston said she’d be on board for a third film, but that it was up to Netflix to decide. “It depends on how everybody responds to this film,” Aniston said. “And if they enjoy themselves and had a good time, Netflix will hopefully say, ‘Yep.'”

We don’t yet know how the movie will do for Netflix, but things are looking good for the sequel to be a smash hit. The first film, 2019’s Murder Mystery, broke records for the streaming service and was, at one point, one of Netflix’s most popular original movies ever. The first film also broke back into Netflix’s trending titles last the week before the sequel’s release, indicating that audiences are eagerly anticipating the release of Murder Mystery 2.

We’ll have to wait and see for now, but we have a feeling it won’t be long before Netflix announces Murder Mystery 3.
