‘Shazam 2’ May Be Hitting Digital One Month After Opening in Theaters

UPDATE 4/6/2023: Warner Bros. announced on Thursday that Shazam 2 will release on VOD even earlier than expected, on April 7, 2023, aka tomorrow. That’s less than one month after the film opened in theaters. You will be able to buy the film for $24.99 and rent for 48-hour rental for $19.99 on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Vudu. The film will arrive on Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra on May 23.

Shazam 2 may release on VOD platforms as early as April 18, according to a now-deleted date published on the Amazon Prime Video pre-order page.

On Tuesday morning, DC fans noticed the digital pre-order page for Shazam! Fury of the Gods on Amazon Prime came with a release date: April 18, 2023. That would be only one month after the film opened in theaters, on March 17, following a less-than-desirable box office opening weekend of $30.5 million, falling short of its projected $35 to $40 million opening.

A representative from Warner Bros. told Decider they could not comment on whether the April 18 digital release date was correct, but did say that the date “has not been decided or announced yet.”

Other digital platforms, including iTunes, Vudu, and Google Play, did not include a release date with the Shazam 2 pre-order listing. Amazon removed the date within a few hours of Decider reaching out, suggesting the listing may have been done in error.

Though the date has not been confirmed, the short theatrical window would not be without precedent. Last month, Warner Bros. pushed Magic Mike’s Last Dance to VOD less than one month after the film opened in theaters. (The movie opened on February 10 and was surprise-released on digital on February 28.) Its last DC superhero film, Black Adam, which also struggled at the box office, also spent about one month in theaters before releasing on digital (it was released on October 21, 2022, before hitting VOD on November 22). That said, the popular M. Night Shyamalan thriller Knock at the Cabin opened on February 3, and won’t hit digital until later this week on March 24.

Decider has reached out to Amazon Prime for comment on the Shazam 2 VOD release date, but did not hear back before the time of publication.

UPDATE 3/22/23: When asked about the Shazam 2 VOD release date, an Amazon representative told Decider “the title is not yet confirmed for an April release on Prime Video via TVOD at this time. This was an error and the date has since been removed.”
