Oh, Sandy! John Travolta had us all in tears as he paid homage to his Grease co-star and longtime friend Olivia Newton-John — who died in August 2022 from a lengthy battle with cancer — while introducing the In Memoriam segment at the Oscars.

Travolta — clearly holding back tears from the moment he stepped onstage — began his introduction by pointing out the “rare luxury” he and his peers have to get to do what they love for a living, before adding that they “sometimes” get to do it with people they “come to love.”

“Since tonight is a celebration of the work and the accomplishments of our community in this past year, it is only fitting, then, that we celebrate those we’ve lost,” he said. “Who dedicated their lives to their craft — both in front of and behind the camera. Through their immeasurable contributions, each of them left an individual mark that shared and informed us. They’ve touched our hearts and made us smile and became dear friends.”

Travolta choked up as he added, “Who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to,” — a touching tribute to Newton-John’s iconic Grease solo, “Hopelessly Devoted To You.”

Viewers took to Twitter to praise Travolta for the heartbreaking introduction. One wrote, “Oh John Travolta, my heart… he did so well, I couldn’t have made that intro if I was him.”

Another pointed out, “I’d forgotten until that Memorium that John Travolta lost both dear friends Olivia Newton-John & Kirstie Alley within a matter of months.”

“It moved me when John Travolta cried on stage when he introduced the in memoriam,” a third person said

Someone else added, “Very sweet of John Travolta to have that chick in his throat remembering Olivia Newton-John. You can tell he’s not over it by a long shot.”

“John Travolta bringing us to tears after he referenced Grease while introducing the ‘In Memoriam’ segment,” another wrote, before someone chimed in, “John Travolta tearing up and quoting hopelessly devoted to you really hit me in my feelings 😭😭😭.”
