Hugh Grant’s Hideously Awkward Oscars Red Carpet Interview With Ashley Graham Is Jaw-Dropping Levels of Uncomfortable

Hugh Grant gets the award for Most Awkward Interview on the Oscars 2023 red carpet on Sunday night.

Grant, who made a brief cameo appearance in the Oscar-nominated film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in 2022, was pulled aside for a red-carpet interview at the 95th Academy Awards, and he did not seem happy to be there. Model Ashley Graham led the interview, and attempted to get the 62-year-old actor to say something—anything—of interest, but Grant simply would not budge.

Graham started with an easy question for Grant: “What’s your favorite thing about coming to the Oscars?” Grant floundered, clearly flustered, and responded, “Um. Well. It’s fascinating. The whole of humanity is here. It’s Vanity Fair.”

Grant, being the intellectual that he is, was likely referring to the general phrase “Vanity Fair,” meaning a place of idle amusement and frivolity, which was first popularized by Pilgrim’s Progress (1678) by John Bunyan. Unfortunately, Graham thought Grant was referring to the magazine and after-party.

Graham then asked Grant what he was excited to see tonight—again, a pretty standard red-carpet question. Once again, Grant was bamboozled. “To see?” he repeated, confused. Graham clarified: Was Grant excited to see anyone win? “No one in particular,” he responded with a sardonic smile. Graham smoothly moved on to another standard: What was Grant wearing tonight?

“Just my suit. I can’t remember my tailor.”

Finally, in desperation, Graham asked Grant about appearing in Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion movie. “How fun is it to shoot something like that?”

But Grant, again, gives her nothing. “Well, I’m barely in it. I’m in it for about three seconds.”

HUGH GRANT AWKWARD OSCARS

Graham, not ready to let Grant off the hook, pushes: “Yeah, but still, you should up and you had fun, right?”

“Yeah, well, almost,” Grant replies.

With an air of defeat, Graham finally lets this painfully awkward interview come to an end, and Grant can’t get away from the camera fast enough.

Yikes! That was difficult to watch. Pour one out for Graham, who did her best. Let’s hope Grant’s publicist never forces him to do a red carpet interview again.
